The Chicken Story

I am fairly new to eating clean and striving towards a truly healthy lifestyle. When my second daughter was born I found that I needed help shedding those last pounds of baby weight and I turned to Beachbody and the 21 Day Fix to get me started on my journey. I had no idea what I was getting myself into! I had always considered myself a healthy eater and thought I felt pretty good on a day-to-day basis. Boy had I been missing out and mislead! From the beginning, I was committed to my new fitness journey, but I didn’t truly “get it”. I wanted a diet that I would be able to follow long term and didn’t want restrictions that I knew I would just go back to and risk derailing my progress. I started learning about portion sizes, and tons of food myths: fat-free will make you fat?! What?! Corn is a carb?! Gasp!

And then came my true “ah-ha” moment! The moment when it finally struck home and I “got it”. It was a crazier than average work week and I was stressed about dinner. I was still trying to get the knack of eating clean and having it taste like a real meal. My husband suggested getting a rotisserie chicken from our local grocery store on his way home. Sounded perfectly innocent to me, and I enthusiastically agreed. After dinner we were cleaning up the kitchen and I glanced at the label on the chicken – I was a label reader now, after all! What I read was truly shocking and disgusting!

Sodium phosphate? Maltodextrin? Natural flavors? What’s wrong with the normal taste of this chicken? Carrageenan, sodium diacetate, malic acid, sodium carbonate? You mean that congealed junk at the bottom of the bag isn’t normal old chicken fat? It’s gelling and thickening agents, preservatives and chemicals?? Gross!! I didn’t ask for any of this junk to be injected into my whole chicken! I was sickened!

So that was when my passion for eating clean and sharing that passion began to blossom. I am not a nutritionist or fitness expert. I’m just like you. I want my family and friends to live healthy lives where we can all feel our best every day. And if I can help that happen or make it easier in any way, well, that’s why I’m here, bringing you Foodie Friday with Beth!
